In 2025, Luxembourg found itself among the three lowest-ranked countries in the European Union for renewable electricity consumption, according to the latest figures from Eurostat. Despite an overall increase in renewable energy usage across the EU, Luxembourg’s performance remained relatively weak.
Renewable energy sources contributed 20.2% to Luxembourg’s gross final energy consumption, positioning the nation near the bottom of the EU’s performance chart. Specifically, when it comes to electricity, only 23.3% of Luxembourg’s consumption was derived from renewable sources. This placed it just above Czechia and Malta in terms of renewable electricity consumption.
On a broader scale, the European Union showed notable progress, with renewable energy making up 26.2% of the bloc’s gross final energy consumption in 2025. This marks a significant increase from 2004 when the share was just 9.6%. The EU has set an ambitious target to expand this share to 42.5% by the year 2030.
Leading the charge in renewable energy usage within the EU, Sweden reported that 65.4% of its overall energy consumption came from renewable sources. Finland and Denmark also ranked highly in renewable energy adoption. Meanwhile, Austria emerged as the leader in renewable electricity consumption, with more than 90% of its electricity being produced from renewable sources.
