The Dutch company PAL-V has reached a significant milestone in its quest to make flying cars a reality, receiving approval from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) to begin producing aviation components for its Liberty model. This approval marks an important step forward, allowing the company to manufacture the aircraft-related parts of the Liberty, a three-wheeled vehicle that can transition between driving on roads and flying in the skies.
PAL-V’s Liberty is a unique hybrid that combines a conventional road vehicle with a retractable rotor and propeller system. On the ground, it functions like a typical car, but it can transform for flight by unfolding its rotor system. Unlike helicopters, the Liberty requires a runway for both takeoff and landing, as it is not capable of vertical takeoff. To operate the Liberty, an individual needs both a driving license and a pilot’s license.
The next major hurdle for PAL-V is obtaining full certification of the Liberty as an aircraft, which is expected to be achieved by 2028. Once certified, the vehicle will be legally allowed to take to the skies, paving the way for commercial operations. The Liberty can reach road speeds of up to 160 km/h and has a flying range estimated at approximately 500 km, offering a versatile mode of transportation for its users.
Priced at around €299,000 before taxes and additional costs, the Liberty has already seen strong demand. The company has reported that the first 250 units have been sold, with customers including the Dutch fire brigade. If all goes according to plan, PAL-V could see its flying cars in operation by 2028, revolutionizing personal transportation.
