Singapore and Luxembourg are aiming to deepen their collaboration in cutting-edge fields such as quantum computing, artificial intelligence, space, and satellite communications. This initiative is part of a broader effort to bolster the longstanding partnership between the two nations. Singapore’s Prime Minister, Lawrence Wong, emphasized their shared challenges as small states with limited domestic resources, noting that both countries have leveraged their openness and global connectivity to establish themselves as significant financial and business hubs that cater to larger regional markets.
Highlighting the robust economic ties between the two countries, Wong pointed out that Luxembourg stands as the largest European Union investor in Singapore. Conversely, Singapore ranks as Luxembourg’s second-largest investment destination within the EU bloc. Both nations are also committed to enhancing connections between ASEAN and the European Union, sharing a mutual interest in fostering regional integration and maintaining an open, rules-based international order.
Luxembourg’s Prime Minister, Luc Frieden, is currently on an official visit to Singapore from September 6 to 8. During his visit, he met with President Tharman Shanmugaratnam to discuss geopolitical issues and explore collaborative strategies to promote stability, predictability, and adherence to the rule of law in the international arena. This visit coincides with the commemoration of 50 years of diplomatic relations between Singapore and Luxembourg.
The opening of Luxembourg’s first resident embassy in Singapore is being hailed as a significant step, underscoring the nation’s commitment to enhancing its engagement with Singapore and the broader region. As part of his visit, Frieden is set to deliver the 48th Singapore Lecture on September 8, where he will address Europe’s role and autonomy amid a changing global landscape.
