These conditions have resulted in a significant increase in water consumption, placing substantial strain on the country’s public water supplies. The government has enacted this alert in an effort to conserve drinking water reserves and avert potential shortages. Although the current national campaign emphasizes voluntary public cooperation, certain municipalities have already implemented compulsory water-use restrictions to address the situation.
Among the municipalities taking decisive action is Esch-sur-Alzette, which has imposed several bans on non-essential water activities. These include the prohibition of washing cars outside authorized car washes, cleaning pavements and building exteriors, filling private swimming pools and decorative ponds, operating fountains that do not recirculate water, cooling food or drinks with running water, and watering parks, sports fields, and other green spaces, except for newly planted areas. However, businesses whose operations necessitate water usage remain exempt from these restrictions.
The Water Administration has issued a warning regarding the critically low levels of rivers throughout the country, prompting a nationwide prohibition on water extraction from these sources, with the exception of the Moselle River. In response to these conditions, authorities are urging citizens to adopt water-saving practices. Recommended measures include taking shorter showers, operating washing machines and dishwashers only with full loads, minimizing garden watering, and refraining from unnecessary outdoor water use. These efforts are aimed at reducing the likelihood of more severe restrictions if dry weather patterns persist.
Violations of local water-use regulations can lead to fines ranging from €25 to €250, underscoring the seriousness of the situation. As part of the broader conservation strategy, the government and local officials continue to encourage residents to actively participate in preserving water resources.
