In a significant leadership transition, Sir Demis Hassabis is stepping down from his role as chief executive of Google DeepMind, a major AI research unit. Hassabis, who co-founded DeepMind in 2010, will now serve as the chair of the organization and assume a new position as chief scientist at Alphabet, Google’s parent company. This change will allow him to concentrate on long-term AI research and the pursuit of artificial general intelligence while stepping away from everyday management duties.
Koray Kavukcuoglu, currently the chief technology officer at DeepMind, will step into the leadership role as the organization’s head, taking on the title of senior vice-president. Hassabis expressed that this transition will enable him to dedicate more time to advancing AI in ways that are beneficial to humanity. Additionally, he will continue his responsibilities as chief executive of Isomorphic Labs, a drug-discovery firm that originated from DeepMind.
These leadership shifts coincide with the departure of several senior engineers from Google’s AI team. Notably, Jeff Dean and Sanjay Ghemawat are leaving to start a new venture, Discovery Loop, which will focus on machine learning and research in science and engineering. This move comes as the competitive landscape in the AI industry becomes more intense.
Google is facing increasing pressure from other major players like OpenAI and Anthropic, both of which have achieved notable progress in AI models and coding technologies.
