Iran has leveled accusations against Qatar, claiming that the Gulf state is hindering efforts to uncover the whereabouts of three Iranian pilots who reportedly disappeared during the recent conflict. Qatar has firmly denied these allegations, rejecting any suggestions that it is holding the pilots. According to Mohammad Bagherzadeh, an official from Iran’s armed forces, a team of Iranian Air Force experts has been awaiting authorization for months to enter Qatar and conduct an investigation. He has called on Doha to permit the visit and urged the International Committee of the Red Cross to pursue the issue further.
Previously, Iran announced that it had retrieved the body of Majid Kazemi, a pilot who died during an operation involving the US Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar. In contrast, Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Majed al-Ansari, rebuffed the claims of the detention of Iranian pilots, stating that after the pilots allegedly breached Qatari airspace, Qatar attempted to communicate with them but received no response, prompting defensive actions. Additionally, Qatar reported that its search and rescue teams had launched missions to locate the pilots and their remains, and had worked in coordination with Iran for the transfer of one recovered pilot’s body.
Qatar asserts that Iranian officials were invited in April to dispatch a team to the country to gain insights into the search and rescue efforts, yet they have not responded to the invitation. This ongoing situation occurs amid persistent regional tensions involving Iran, the US, and other countries, following the outbreak of conflict earlier this year. Amidst these frictions, Qatar has been instrumental in diplomatic initiatives aimed at reducing tensions and fostering dialogue among the involved parties.
