The strategic waterway saw only three commodity vessels transit, marking the lowest daily traffic since May. This significant drop reflects heightened security concerns following recent attacks on commercial ships and escalating military tensions in the region.
This slowdown in maritime traffic has raised alarm over potential disruptions to global energy supplies, given that the Strait of Hormuz is pivotal for the transportation of a large portion of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas. The resulting uncertainty has also contributed to a surge in global oil prices. In the midst of this, several ships that successfully navigated through the strait paused in the Gulf of Oman, while a fuel tanker reversed its route back to the Persian Gulf after briefly exiting the waterway.
On Wednesday, the waterway had already experienced diminished activity, with only 11 vessels making the crossing, compared to the usual daily average of around 125 ships. Notably absent for the second consecutive day were large crude oil tankers and liquefied natural gas carriers. Despite the reduced traffic, two very large crude carriers, each transporting approximately two million barrels of oil, eventually emerged beyond the strait and continued their journey to Asia and Europe.
Meanwhile, in a related development, Iraq temporarily suspended oil loading at its Basra export terminal following a drone strike on an oil tanker, though operations resumed shortly thereafter. Iran has issued warnings that if military tensions persist, oil and gas exports through the Strait of Hormuz could face continued disruptions, stoking fears of further instability in global energy markets. This ongoing situation underscores the vulnerability of critical energy trade routes amid geopolitical strife.
