Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has been congratulated by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan after her administration set a new record as the longest continuously serving government in the history of the Italian Republic. Erdoğan commended Meloni for achieving this significant milestone and expressed optimism that the collaboration and solidarity between Türkiye and Italy would continue to flourish.
Meloni’s government marked a historic 1,413 consecutive days in office, surpassing the previous record of 1,412 days held by former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi’s administration from 2001 to 2005. Since taking office in October 2022, Meloni has not only made history as Italy’s first female prime minister but has also fostered a close working relationship with Erdoğan. The partnership between the two leaders has seen them engage in regular discussions focusing on both bilateral and regional matters.
The relationship between Türkiye and Italy under their leadership has seen expanded cooperation in several critical areas, including trade, investment, defense, energy, and migration. They have also been active in coordinating on regional issues, notably concerning Libya and Ukraine. This strengthening of ties was highlighted during the fourth Türkiye-Italy Intergovernmental Summit held in Rome in April 2025, which Meloni and Erdoğan co-chaired. The summit resulted in several agreements aimed at bolstering their strategic and economic partnership.
Further reinforcing their commitment to collaboration, Meloni and Erdoğan most recently met during the NATO summit in Ankara in July. During this meeting, they reaffirmed their shared intentions to enhance trade, increase mutual investment, and advance cooperation in defense and other strategic sectors. This ongoing dialogue underscores the deepening relationship between the two nations, driven by shared interests and goals.
