Austria is exploring the possibility of joining Luxembourg’s GovSat 2 satellite communications initiative, as the two nations seek to enhance their defense and security collaboration. This development emerged during a recent visit by Austrian Defence Minister Klaudia Tanner to Luxembourg, where she engaged in discussions about expanding joint efforts in defense, space, and cybersecurity with her Luxembourg counterpart, Defence Minister Yuriko Backes.
The visit included talks with SES, a satellite operator, about Austria’s potential involvement in the GovSat 2 program. Tanner emphasized the growing importance of secure satellite communications in the face of escalating geopolitical tensions. She noted that enhanced cooperation in this area could bolster the resilience of national communications and aid in advancing Europe’s strategic autonomy.
GovSat 2, slated for launch in 2029, aims to deliver secure communications services to Luxembourg’s defense sector, as well as the European Union, NATO, and allied countries. This project represents a significant opportunity for Austria to contribute to and benefit from a broader defense communication network.
In a move to solidify their commitment to mutual defense interests, Austria and Luxembourg signed a letter of intent to fortify collaboration across various defense-related domains, including cybersecurity, space technology, and military training. While Austria has yet to disclose its potential financial investment in the GovSat 2 initiative, the agreement underscores both countries’ dedication to advancing their defense capabilities through shared efforts.
